Editorial Design for Private High School – annual print publication since 2017
CLIENT:
St. Louis University High School
Jesuit all-boys school in St. Louis, MO USA
PROJECT:
SLUH Magazine is a flagship publication that connects the St. Louis University High community through stories that reflect the school's Jesuit values and commitment to forming Men for Others. I partnered with SLUH to create the magazine's inaugural issue in 2017, developing a publication that engages alumni, parents, students, and supporters while strengthening lifelong ties to the school. Since its debut, SLUH Magazine has been published annually and remains an important component of the school's advancement and community engagement efforts.
FORMAT:
60+ page magazine printed on dull coated stock for superior image sharpness, vibrant color reproduction, and durability, while improving legibility for long-form reading. Offset printing, perfect bound.
ROLE:
Creative Director / Designer
APPROACH:
My approach to editorial design starts with the client’s mission. I’m inspired by the work my clients do, and I see my role as helping their stories take shape in a visual format that feels inviting, engaging, and true to who they are. For SLUH Magazine, that means creating a publication that reflects the school’s strong Jesuit identity and established brand while giving each story the space to find its own voice. I let the content guide the mood and pacing of the design, building a flexible visual system that can support everything from in-depth features to quick news updates without losing consistency or clarity.
Collaboration is central to my process. I develop an initial layout, gather feedback, and refine the design until the story is being told in the strongest possible way. I’m always asking whether readers will quickly understand the key message and whether the design creates opportunities for deeper engagement. After nearly a decade of working together on SLUH Magazine, we’ve developed a trusted partnership and an efficient workflow, united by the shared goal of presenting stories that strengthen the SLUH community while maintaining a publication that feels cohesive, polished, and unmistakably SLUH.
